Veronica Locatelli was a lecturer at the Educational Sciences University and a researcher at the renowned Academia della Crusca, artist, director and author of short films and video installations. She tragically passed away at the Forte Belvedere in Florence. On the night of July 15th and 16th 2008, Veronica was walking on the meadow beside the embrasure of the Forte Belvedere towards the concert held a little further on, where her boyfriend and friends were awaiting her. After a few meters, she found herself at the edge of the walkway, on the meadow, at about the same height as what seemed to be another meadow, but which was, in fact, the precipice of the embrasure or cannoniera, an unpredictable inlet with a gaping chasm inside. At this point the walkway that divides the meadow-embankment from the embrasure is much narrower and all it takes is a slightly longer step to end up in the chasm. On the left there was a barrier that, absurdly positioned, seemed to advise visitors to continue onwards into the void. Ahead, undermining the perception of the danger, so much vegetation was sticking out from the other side of the embrasure's wall, that it created the illusion that what was on the other side of the walkway was a meadow and not a precipice (a meadow which, in fact, is located a few meters beyond the precipice). The danger was further compacted by near-complete darkness and a total lack of protective barriers and of clearly visible warning signs. Veronica did not act recklessly and did not commit an act of imprudence: anyone going to the meadow in that direction could unexpectedly fall in the precipice. Only two years earlier, Luca Raso, a young man from Rome, had fallen to his death at the same spot, and despite this, nothing had been undertaken to ensure adequate security measures were in place for that part of the Forte. How, then, was it possible that new events, exhibitions, screenings, etc. were even thought of, let alone organized, without first ensuring that indispensable measures to prevent further tragedies had been adopted?

WE ARE GRATEFUL TO THE JUDICIARY FOR HAVING IDENTIFIED AND CONDEMNED THOSE WHO ARE GUILTY OF CAUSING VERONICA'S DEATH.
